500 Low-Carb Recipes: 500 Recipes, from Snacks to Dessert, That the Whole Family Will Love

500 Low-Carb Recipes: 500 Recipes, from Snacks to Dessert, That the Whole Family Will Love

$3.95

Low-fat or low-carb? A recent "New York Times Magazine "(July 7, 2002) cover story answered this question and said that Dr. Atkins was right all along, "its not fat that makes us fat but carbohydrates." Though the government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in research trying to prove that fat is the cause of obesity, there has been a subtle shift in the scientific consensus over the past five years supporting what the low-carb diet doctors have been saying all along: if we eat less carbohydrates, we will lose weight and live longer. One of the toughest challenges of any diet is having enough variety and choices to keep the dieter from losing interest. The most common reason that people abandon their diet is boredom but "500 LOW CARB RECIPES: 500 Recipes, From Snacks to Dessert, That the Whole Family Will Love" by Dana Carpender has more than enough recipes to keep even the most finicky dieter on track. With recipes for everything including hors dAEoeuvres, snacks, breads, muffins, side dishes, entrees, cookies, cakes and much more, this is an endless supply for creating meals for the whole family night after night. Whether everyone in the family is on a diet or not, these recipes are proven winners with adults and kids alike. Also included: Many one-dish meals for single people–main dish salads, skillet suppers that include meat and vegetables, and hearty soups that are a full meal in a bowl. Ideas for breaking out of old ways of looking at food with suggestions that save time and money and change what is considered a normal meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner.Information about where to find low-carbohydrate specialty products and descriptions of low-carb specialty foods found in grocery stores everywhere. An entire chapter that lists and describes low-carb substitute ingredients such as fats and oils, flour substitutes, liquids, seasonings and sweeteners. Dieters will be pleased to know that they can eat foods like guacamole, omelets, pizza, steak, ham and dessert without giving up great taste and still lose weight. There are enough recipes to create the perfect menu for any holiday of the year–including Thanksgiving. Each of the 500 recipes includes a carbohydrate count to help calculate the total carb intake of each menu. There are more recipes for main dishes and side dishes than most low-carb dieters will ever be able to eat–everything from down-home cooking to ethnic fare; from quick-and-easy weeknight meals to knock-their-socks off party food. "500 LOW CARB RECIPES" is the last cookbook any dieter will ever need to buy and certain to be used until the binding is worn out

Pure Dessert

Pure Dessert

$29.61

A refreshing change in every respect When you are working with great ingredients, you want to keep it simple. You don’t want to blur flavor by overcomplicating. This is why Pure Dessert, from the beloved Alice Medrich, offers the simplest of recipes, using the fewest ingredients in the most interesting ways. There are no glazes, fillings, or frostings–just dessert at its purest, most elemental, and most flavorful. Alice deftly takes us places we haven’t been, using, for example, whole grains, usually reserved for breads, to bring a lovely nutty quality to cookies and strawberry shortcake. Pound cake takes on a new identity with a touch of olive oil and sherry. Unexpected cheeses make divine souffles. Chestnut flour and walnuts virtually transform meringue. Varietal honeys and raw sugars infuse ice creams and sherbets with delectable new flavor. Inspired choices of ingredients are at the heart of this collection of entirely new recipes: sesame brittle ice cream, corn-flour tuiles with tangy sea salt and a warming bite of black pepper, honey caramels, strawberries with single-malt sabayon. To witness Alice’s idea-stream as she describes how she arrived at each combination is to instantly understand why three of her books have won Best Cookbook of the Year. She’s an experimenter, tinkerer, and sleuth, fascinated with trial and error, with the effects of small changes in recipes, exploring combinations tirelessly and making remarkable discoveries. Does cold cream or hot cream do a better job coaxing out the flavor of mint leaves or rose petals? Why is it that dusting a warm brownie with spices gives it an enticing aromatic nose, whereas putting the spice in the batter blurs the chocolate flavor? Do cooked strawberries or raw make for the better sorbet? Loaded with advice and novel suggestions, with great recipes and eye-catching, full-color photographs that show off these simple, straightforward desserts, Pure Dessert is an education and a revelation. The Art of the Dessert

The Art of the Dessert

$3.95

Named one of the country’s top ten pastry chefs by both Chocolatier and Pastry Art & Design magazines and nominated five times for the James Beard Pastry Chef of the Year award, Ann Amernick is one of the nation’s most accomplished dessert makers. Now, in "The Art of Dessert" she shares nearly 100 recipes for artfully distinctive desserts – the summation of her long and distinguished career as a baker. Amernick’s creations often recall familiar foods and flavors – a cheese danish, for example, or a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup – but in her hands, the familiar becomes something truly extraordinary: Apricot and Custard Danish Sandwiches, or Peanut Butter Cream Truffles with Shortbread and Raspberry Gelee. Spanning the whole range of dessert possibilities – cakes and tortes, pies and tarts, cookies and candies, cold desserts, warm desserts, and dessert sandwiches – "The Art of the Dessert" is filled with recipes that are as innovative and sophisticated as they are homey and unfailingly delicious. Chocolate Toffee Torte, Lemon Caramel Tartlets, Almond Lace Cookies, Amaretto Nougat Cups, Toasted Coconut Pecan Souffle Tartlets, and Pumpkin Custard Napoleons are just a few of the dazzling creations you’ll discover. For each recipe, Amernick offers detailed, step-by-step guidance on preparation, as well as sidebars that offer options for embellishing the desserts when serving. Sixteen striking full-color photographs accompany the recipes, along with Amernick’s "Trucs of the Trade" and expert advice on pastry making, including basic and advanced techniques, information on equipment and ingredients, and helpful tips on creating all kinds of dessert components and garnishes, from tartlet shells to fruit leather. If you want to refine your baking skills and add some show-stopping new desserts to your repertoire, let this extraordinary cookbook by a master pastry chef be your guide.

But the best part comes next. Dastardly Mash, featuring nuts, raisins, and hunks of chocolate. The celebrated Heath Bar Crunch. New York Super Fudge Chunk. Oreo Mint. In addition to Ben & Jerry’s 11 greatest hits, here are recipes for ice creams made with fresh fruit, with chocolate, with candies and cookies, and recipes for sorbets, sundaes, and baked goods. An illustrator named Sonia Roetter added a little drawing to each recipe, and a whimsical and useful page was created for each month. We reprint, in Fun In The Kitchen, more than a hundred of our favorite entries from the many hundreds which were run in the life of the column. They are simple enough to be cooked by children eight years and older. We have added a little color to the images in a manner which we think would have pleased the artist. Our staff chef has examined all the instructions for reasonableness.

The Healthy Kitchen: Recipes for a Better Body, Life, and Spirit

The Healthy Kitchen: Recipes for a Better Body, Life, and Spirit

$3.95

Two of America’s most popular authorities on healthy eating and cooking join forces in this inspiring, easy-to-use cookbook. This is not a diet book. It is a lively guide to healthy cooking, day-by-day, packed with essential information and, above all, filled with enticing food. Andrew Weil, M.D.–author of the best-selling Eating Well for Optimum Health–brings to this perfect collaboration a comprehensive philosophy of nutrition grounded in science. Rosie Daley–acclaimed for her best-seller, In the Kitchen with Rosie–brings to it her innovative and highly flavorful spa cuisine. The recipes are eclectic, drawing from the healthy and delicious cooking of the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Asia, among other cuisines. For starters, you might try Grilled Satay or a Miso Pate; for soup, often a meal in itself, a hearty Mixed-Bean Minestrone Stew or a Roasted Winter Squash and Apple Soup with Cilantro Walnut Pesto; a special entree could be the Savory Roasted Cornish Hens with Roasted Garlic or Baked Spicy Tofu with Bean Thread Noodles, Corn, and Mango; for a simple supper, Turkey Burgers or Portobello Burgers; and for the occasional indulgence, a dessert of Almond Fruit Tart or Peach and Blueberry Cobbler. Andy and Rosie do not always agree. When Rosie calls for chicken, Andy offers a tofu alternative; she likes the flavor of coconut milk, whereas he prefers ground nut milk; when she makes a pastry with butter, he suggests using Spectrum Spread. There are no hard-and-fast rules. Lifelong health begins in the kitchen, so this is a lifestyle book as well as a cookbook. In it you will learn from Dr. Weil: – how to make use of nutritional information in everyday cooking – what is organic . . . and how to buy organic foods – the importance of reading labels and what to look for – sensible advice about eggs, milk, cheese, salt, spicy foods, wine, coffee – the facts about sugar and artificial sweeteners . . . and from Rosie: – how to get kids involved–from skinning almonds to layering lasagna – ways to have fun in the kitchen–creating scallion firecrackers and radish rosettes – low-fat and nondairy alternatives for those with special concerns – smart menu planning–letting the seasons be your guide . . . and lots more. This revolutionary book will change forever the way you cook for yourself and your family. With 58 photographs in full color.

Sweet Home: Over 100 Heritage Desserts and Ideas for Preserving Family Recipes

Sweet Home: Over 100 Heritage Desserts and Ideas for Preserving Family Recipes

$5.93

Food writer and stylist Rebecca Ffrench comes from a long line of dessert lovers. She fondly remembers the special bonding time her grandparents had over dessert. The smell of fresh baked brownies transports her back into her mother s kitchen where there was always some kind of foil-covered treat waiting on the counter. And, even today, she rarely lets the week go by without baking something for her family. Just as she remembers her mother s warm, chocolatey pudding cake more fondly than her Monday meatloaf, Rebecca wants her own kids memories of dessert to be equally vivid. It was this very sense of nostalgia for these family heirloom recipes that planted the seeds for her first cookbook. After the loss of a beloved aunt, Rebecca came into possession of the aunt s journal. It turned out that this journal was not only filled with memories but also a lifetime of recipes recipes that would have been lost had they not been recorded and passed on. This inspired Rebecca to begin recording her family s history and heritage through cakes and cookies, pies and puddings, tarts and treats, and in this book, she includes more than 75 of her family s favorite I m home treats, from an ooey-gooey Go-To Hot Fudge Pudding Cake to a moist, dense Coconut Bunny Cake that Rebecca s dad perfected to please his granddaughters. Any recipe you pick from her list sounds lush and tempting: Love Struck Sour Cherry Pie, Norwegian Custard Buns, Spiced Apple Cider Doughnuts, No-Fail Caramel Sauce, Criss-Cross Apricot Coffeecake the list goes deliciously on and on. Broken down into Preserving, Celebrating, Giving, and Creating, SWEET HOME teaches readers not only how to make delectable desserts, but how to keep your family s traditions alive. Whether she s preserving her Norwegian heritage by making Cloudberry Krumkaker Cones, celebrating Halloween with a Spooktacular Cheesecake, giving Kahlua Pound Cake through the post, or creating a new family tradition by making her father s Chocolate Mudslide Cookies, Rebecca Miller Ffrench shows you how easy and delicious it is to make your home a sweet one. Add in the warm and winning headnotes on family and baking, tips to make each dish a success, and a special Baking Notes and Pantry section, and SWEET HOME is a recipe for a dessert classic the perfect go-to guide for families wanting to preserve their history through recipes and food.

The Best American Recipes

The Best American Recipes

$3.95

In its first year, THE BEST AMERICAN RECIPES established itself as a runaway success and a newsmaker in the food world and was hailed as one of the top cookbooks by the NEW YORK TIMES, the BOSTON GLOBE, HARPER’S BAZAAR, and many other major publications. For this volume, editors Fran McCullough and Suzanne Hamlin have assembled an even larger collection of the year’s best recipes from an even wider array of sources. The result is a dazzlingly diverse collection. There are weekday dinners: a skillet supper that no family cook should be without, a huge vegetarian feast in a single bowl, a winter salad that won the hearts of a top food magazine’s editors. There are recipes to satisfy our latest cultural cravings: the lamb shanks that knowledgeable New Yorkers consider the best, an easy Indonesian chicken that Lauren Bacall reportedly adores, a slow-roasted salmon from the country’s most fashionable Irish chef. There are great grilling recipes, cutting-edge dishes, best-ever holiday classics, and for dessert, everything from simple cookies to a show-stopping chocolate cake.

Dessert Fourplay: Sweet Quartets from a Four-Star Pastry Chef

Dessert Fourplay: Sweet Quartets from a Four-Star Pastry Chef

$30.43

Consider the strawberry: its familiar flavor and texture; its fresh, sweet smell. Now imagine the same fruit distilled and carbonated for a refreshing soda, slow-roasted for a reinvented strawberry shortcake, made into a creamy strawberry ice cream and a chewy strawberry leather, and combined with coconut cream and crisp chocolate pastry. Alone, each dessert is a taste of paradise, but together this "fourplay," or tasting, created by Johnny Iuzzini, superstar pastry chef of the celebrated four-star restaurant Jean Georges in New York, is a sophisticated explosion of a familiar flavor that begins with the taste of strawberry rich on your tongue and ends with an effervescent tingle in your nose. Far from the conventional slice of cake at the end of a meal, Johnny’s seasonal creations–four mini desserts in a quartet of complementary flavors and textures–are a culinary adventure. In "Dessert FourPlay," he shares his secrets and inspirations, delivering standout recipes for incredible desserts that can be served alone or combined into his signature fourplay groupings, creating the perfect sweet finale for any meal. With the home cook in mind, Johnny offers tips on simplifying professional recipes and provides basic recipes for transcendent cakes, cookies, tuiles, ice creams, sorbets, granites, and more. These building blocks can be used to create magnificent multifaceted desserts, or they can be perfect desserts by themselves. Some recipes have surprising versatility: the shiny smooth chocolate glaze Johnny uses to ice cakes doubles as the ultimate hot fudge sauce; a lemony madeleine batter becomes a layer in a cake. Iuzzini pairs cool with hot, crispy with creamy, sweet with spicy, and the expected–chocolate, strawberries, and cinnamon–with the unexpected–chiles, beets, and chocolatey puffs. The result: desserts that refresh, inspire, and satisfy beyond expectations. "Dessert FourPlay" invigorates all the senses and inspires home cooks to create innovative desserts of their own.
